Žydrūnas Savickas has become a member of VMFD Žalgiris family and believes this is a team that could help making Lithuania famous
“I know a lot of football teams, but I really could not name who is playing where. I see news about Žalgiris increasingly often. I believe that the revived Žalgiris players will grow and become a team that will help make Lithuania famous, – says Žydrūnas Savickas, while the companies under his management, “Savickio sporto klubas” and “Savickas nutrition”, have become the partners of the Vilnius City Football Association Žalgiris. – Having started collaboration, I will have to pay more attention to Žalgiris and football. I hope Žalgiris players will be first in Lithuania, and will also play successfully in Europe“.
Having visited VMFD Žalgiris team's workout Monday evening, Žydrūnas believes that eventually Žalgiris players will become able to play at European football tournament group stages.
“People's interest arises when achievements are reached in the international arenas. I think that is what is needed for football to overtake basketball in Lithuania. And it is not necessary to win some prize immediately. It would be enough if the team did well in the European tournaments“, – the strongman is convinced.
Žydrūnas admits that no other type of sport can compete with football in the world, and Lithuania could also not be an exception.
“Even though for me, as a member of the strongmen sport, the situation when one type of sport is reigning the world is not very acceptable, there is a tradition settled in the world that there is football and there are other sports. With its popularity, football is considerably distant from others. If you start talking about football in any country, football will be the only sport to unite everyone. The geography of other sports is much narrower – admits Žydrūnas, who promotes the popularity of strongmen sport in Lithuaniap. – A strong football team could make Lithuania more famous. It could provide Vilnius with economical profit, because football is probably the only sport that can attract not tens, but lots of sports tourists“.
Football is stuck deep in Žydrūnas' memory. The strongman smilingly remembers his childhood, when he was chasing a football in the yard with his friends.
There were a lot of football enthusiasts in the yard. If the weather allowed it, we used to play football every day. We would sort ourselves into teams and play together. I wanted to be a forward, but I usually had to stand in the gates. Everyone wanted to score goals, but someone had to be there to not allow them be scored. I was quite good at it, therefore I usually tried to stand in the gates, – tells the strongman, who played football until he was thirteen and started attending the body-building hall. – When we played in the yard, the garage door would become the football gate. We used to go play in our so-called stadium, which was actually a field by the lake with one gate, and the other was substituted by two trees. In these conditions a few football players grew up, who have played in various teams in the country.”
According to Žydrūnas, football is attractive because it does not require any special conditions to be played. “One always wants better conditions, but in order to play football it is enough to have a ball and a field. It might be harder to find a field now, since all land is private, - smiles the strongman. - It used to be easier for us, because we were playing on the country's land. But now too, if there is enough willingness, it is possible to find a field, hammer a gate and play football”.
Žydrūnas, just like most of VMFD Žalgiris fans, has already become the member of Žalgiris family. Having the season ticket I will be able to attend the majority of the matches and support this perspective team”, claims the strongest person in the world Žydrūnas Savickas.
